indulgence

Image from here

Today, by surprise, I received the October issue of the British Vogue. One of my most wonderful escapes every month. It is not sold here on the island, but through some great people each month I have the honour of receiving the British, the French, the Australian or sometimes even the Japanese Vogue.

This month a combination of Russian Dolls, Dreams and Golden Glories come together to make yet another great indulgence. But most important, it is back to red lipstick. Hmmmm…are you ready girls?

tulip mania

Image via Wikipedia

Yesterday I saw the movie Wall street. One of my favourite parts of the movie is when Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) explains about the tulip bubble (tulip mania). There is a wonderful piece of art standing in his apartment about this (of which I unfortunately have not yet been able to find a picture of). The amazing thing is of course that since 1637, we have learned absolutely nothing about keeping an economy stable.

It was a warm September afternoon in Curacao, the sun was setting over the Caribbean sea as we made our way through the busy streets to the Avila Hotel. It was buzzing with people and music, all emerged in the spirit of Christmas (yes, I know, quite odd... It was 28 degrees, in September and here we were at a Christmas market with a Santa Clause and all). The bottles of water and the ice-stand replaced the hot chocolate and gluhwein, while we enjoyed the view of the beach and all the wonderful lights shining on the Octagon.

Yet another interesting Saturday afternoon on this wonderful little island.

Hope you had a light-filled weekend as well.

the umbrella moment

Image via Habitually Chic

Well, with all the rain these last few days, I must admit that when I walk out of my house towards my car in the morning, I imagine a few (good) men surrounding me with wonderful umbrellas, exactly as in the picture above. (the rain is getting to me, I know; but if Catherine Deneuve can have it, so can I)

the rain continues

You will be happy to note that is has been raining here....again! Though it usually only rains for an hour or two, last night it started at 10pm and hasn't stopped since (too bad for the tourists and the streets....great for my garden). Of course as I am writing this, the sky is clearing up and the sun is peaking around the clouds. Yes, our type of autumn weather surely has its Caribbean charm.

Hope you are having a great week.

interior sweetness

From Laduree

One of the wonderful Laduree shops

macaroon delight

Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised with some of the most delicious things in the world.
A few years ago, when I first had the pleasure to visit Paris, I was introduced to the wonderful shop of Laduree. This shop, turned concept, turned legend, started in 1862. You might call it an upper class bakery, a sweet saloon, a house of grandeur or simply the loveliest place in Paris. I am certainly one for the romantic notions of the 19th century; the amazingly large dresses, the opulent interiors, the group orchestrated dances, and the ballrooms filled with a sense of delight. (of course I choose to disregard all the unhygienic, unequal living conditions also connected to this time period,.... let's just keep to the lovely things, shall we?). We you enter a Laduree shop in Paris, it is as if you are stepping back in time to this grand world of how Paris used to be. (a bit Marie Antoinette, you could say). Now, you can imagine the sheer delight I felt when I came across this wondrous place for the first time. During all my visits to Paris, the one place I would always end up was on the Rue Royal in my favorite Laduree shop to buy, packed in the most exquisite boxes, the sensually delicious macaroons that they are famous for.

And thus, yesterday, when I was presented with a beautiful turquoise bag with the gold Laduree logo brought to me all the way from Paris, my heart skipped a beat and all the taste-buds in my body smiled. There appears a tingling feeling when you slowly open the bag and the magic of the boxes (so beautiful, you don't want to open them) appear before you and you can only smile. (This is just by looking at them.... imagine actually eating these delicious macaroons).

Have a deliciously sweet day.

rain

Image from here

Today it rained; the streets overflowed, the wind broke some branches and my car is even more dirty than before. But the plants are greener, the sky is dark and the air is filled with the scent of freshness. I so enjoy the rain here on the island. It is almost as if we have our own little but of autumn (without the cold and the jackets). Remember to feel the rain.

all that jazz II

This weekend was simply incredible. The sounds of jazz filled the air around the island. Friday at midnight, after inspiring shows of La India, George Benson and Luis Enrique, the stage got ready for the grand show of Lionel Richi. On Saturday, whether you started the evening with the jazzy sounds of Natalie Cole or the sweet Brazilian music of Sergio Mendes, we all ended up at the main stage for the sweet performance of John Legend, who was joined for his closing song by Natalie Cole. We ended the night with all the love from Simply Red. We danced (as though no one was watching), we laughed and we enjoyed.

There are few moments when the mind and the body can be in such equilibrium as when one is dancing freely, without worry (yes, the cocktails help), and feel completely alive without a worry in the world.

On this wonderful Sunday afternoon, remember to put some music on, dance a little. I am off to the beach. What a wonderful weekend it is.

Today marks the beginning of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of Spring in the Southern Hermisphere. Where ever it is in the world that you live, enjoy the change of the season (or in my case, the continuation of the beautiful year round Caribbean Summer).
