The last few weeks I have been loving a new pair of white pants I added to my wardrobe. They are so comfortable and somehow white pants have a certain allure to them. It's simple; I live on a Caribbean Island, usually implying warm sunny days. However, we are having our (what seems like an ever lasting) rainy season. And so, there I was on Wednesday afternoon, coming back from a lovely lunch, wearing my white pants and a nice polka-dot top, and stuck in my car (you are indeed reading this correctly, I was stuck in my car).....for at least 10 min of a serious pouring down (10min of intense rain is quite unusual for the island.....or at least it used to be). At a certain point, with my umbrella (a borrowed one), my bag, heels and white pants, I got out of the car and ran (hmmm overstatement....it was more like a light jog....there was so much water), to the building.

That afternoon, I unfortunately had to decide to leave my white pants in the closet for just a few more weeks till the rain passes. Ok, I understand that all of you living in the northern countries have absolutely no sympathy with me (I must admit it is still 27 degrees here even while it rains), but white pants....I am sure you understand the (incredibly embarrassing) result of getting those wet. (luckily I was able to avoid any major damage and embarrassment this week).

Great travel journals

(the wolf pack part of the wt)

Formerly known as Thonburi in the country Siam (now Thailand), Bangkok is an optional destination on the World Trip {wt}. (Somehow the previous names have type of grandeur to them....or maybe it is just me). Bangkok, a sultry and enchanting city, connected by its canals, sumptuous spa's, magnificent roof-top dining and profound spiritual temples is sure to capture any traveler by surprise (at least so I have read... I have yet to find all of this out for myself of course).

As the rest of Thailand (I really do fancy "Siam" more) is a bit too much for this trip, our history and temple desires might be set on the ancient city of Ayuthaya, defined by its colossal monasteries and magnificent ruins. (on an elephant with a chic umbrella as in the first image.....yes....I have a vidid imagination). Considering I have never been even close to Bangkok, geographically speaking (hmmm in any way to be honest), I find it quite a challenge to picture how a simple day in the city would look like. Though much can be planned and researched, it is the element of experiencing something for the first time, with all the surprising and unexpected moments, that really makes it exciting. (I am quite an avid planner, but the sheer knowledge that there will be an incredible amount of surprises, exhilarates me).

It is probably the instant inspiration of summery moments that brings eloquence to many travel journals. Somehow I feel that though an ipad, laptop or in some instances even a phone are easy to carry they do feel a bit less personal than the good (old-fashioned) travel journal. One that many years from now will still be opened with the air of each destination combined with tiny paper details that were once collected (hopefully no dust added). And thus, I am looking for this wonderful journal. One that is simple, not too heavy and just the right size to be carried around and scribble in.

Such a great World Trip {wt} destination to look forward to.

This will be the first 15-hour flight of the trip (I think the only one, but then again....the tickets are not booked just yet....and so there is still a small chance another one of these long stretches will be added).

I am an absolutely terrible singer (I am not being modest here....it is surprising the windows of my car are still in tact). But I love to "sing" at the top of my lungs in the car (karaoke type singing) (of course only when I am alone in the car). It's just such a great feeling. In addition to that I am sure I bring a smile to many faces (those who pass me by and can't help but laugh at the insane sight of me being a rock star for a brief moment in time).

Last year we had our first World Trip {wt} (Miami, Los Angeles, Beijing, Dubai, Lebanon, Frankfurt, Miami), this weekend I was happily planning our second World Trip (destinations chosen, but still pending). One of the possibilities is the mythical and inspirational city of St. Petersburg, Russia (there is a St. Petersburg in Florida as well, and as I came to notice Google and Expedia get confused some times, so now, I simply state Russia just in case). Travel planning being one of my favourite pass-times I emerged myself completely in the history, lodging options and palaces of Peter the Great’s “Paradise”.

Though young in comparison with its European counter parts (founded in 1703 by Peter the Great) the city is a rapture of mystery, legends and canals; enough to intrigue any visitor. On my list of chic-things-to-do in St. Petersburg are (of course, I try to keep it short as we will only be there for a few days…and thus I already anticipate that some of these might not make it to the actual list, but dreaming doesn’t cost anything).

During a World Trip {wt} (which simply implies that we are flying completely around the world….not that we expect to visit an endless amount of destinations) time management is of the essence (and so is luggage management….thus no endless amount of shoes either). Most importantly it is the people travelling with you that count the most (especially on those 14hour flights).

Good morning and welcome to another wonderful week in 2012. I often say that I miss Europe or any big city for the wonderful nights out and parties one can have there (as to say that here on the island it some-times feels as if we are somehow missing out on that). I have to say that yesterday I was one of the lucky ones to enjoy an amazing party on the water. Boats from Aruba and Bonaire joined us in Curacao for an epic Fuikdag. I danced for 6 hours on a yacht to great music (this boat has a sound system that should be in a night-club), surrounded by great people and of course delicious champagne. Today I miraculously woke up full of energy (ok, I was in bed by 9pm, exhausted) and enjoying all the great pictures and video's people are sharing. If ever you have a chance to be in Curacao for Fuikdag, I am sure you will have the time of your life as well. Today it is back to healthy eating, getting loads of work done and simply enjoying.

Fuikdag.

If you are one of the regular beach go-ers, then you are probably heading to Fuik in your lovely boat... however there are quite a few people (I would say the majority) gets in there in whatever floating devise they can put together that weekend. Fuik is usually a quite bay along the East coast of the island. (as seen in the second image). One day a year this is transformed to a huge beach party, bringing together people from the surrounding islands (and anyone able to find a boat ride to the island, as getting there by car is seriously difficult).

Ok, the Dean and Deluca in the hotel lobby was great (small and cute), but the one in Soho.....oh wow. What an amazing place, full of absolutely delicious things. We couldn't resist and had some prosciutto, olives and a cheese plate to taste (while standing at the window and watching the crowds pass by).....hmmm and some how looking after all of our shopping bags. Really a great day of shopping with my mom and aunt.

It is a surprisingly warm, yet rainy afternoon in NYC. Like any “New Yorker” (yeah…. wishful thinking) I am sitting on a high chair in Dean and Deluca’s looking out on to the busy street, eating a bagel and having a coffee. I am happy to note the place is inside the lobby of the hotel and to make life just a little bit more special; they sell macaroons here (perhaps I haven’t been in a Dean & Deluca in such a long time that I am only now noticing this new macaroon addition, but I love it)(ok, they are not Laduree macaroons…but I am seriously not in a picky mood). As the hurried umbrella’s walk by and the sky darkens even though it is only 4.30pm, the innate buzz that somehow engulfs you the moment you cross any bridge into Manhattan surrounds you everywhere you go. Since I arrived at the hotel, I haven’t set a foot outside, and yet, I already feel completely part of the city (am waiting for the rain to pass and family to arrive….. and happily enjoying this moment).

However, I must really admit, that as the temperature drops in the cities up North, I am quite happy to wake up each morning to the Caribbean weather. Good morning and welcome to another wonderful week in November.

I hope you had a fabulous weekend.

Mine was absolutely exquisite.

It started out like any 'normal' Saturday, with pancakes in the morning and a bit of shopping. I was supposed to meet my mother and a few others for a late afternoon lunch at the Hyatt that day. My mom picked me up at exactly 4.05pm, and informed me that we had todrop off a large serving plate to my aunts' house (for a party she was supposed to have on Sunday) before heading to the lunch. (Mind you....just for some visual effects, I had just done my nails and was wearing slippers at this point). We arrived at the house of Anneliese, and just then it started raining. (to continue with the visual effects, I was wearing a gorgeous new blouse which I absolutely did not want to get wet in the rain and thus I place the serving dish on top of my head….and ran up the front porch to her house….not very chic I might add). Her car was not in the drive way, and thus I obviously expected to meet my uncle when opening the door.

As I peeked through the window I saw quite some people in the house. A few thoughts raced through my mind. First I thought, hmmm my mom was mistaken, my aunts event is today. Then as everyone yelled 'SURPRISE' I thought....hmmm they think I am someone else. But then I recognized some of my friends, and it turns out my amazing family and friends organized a surprise afternoon tea to celebrate the finalization of my master’s degree. It was simply, extraordinarily and completely exquisite. (As you must be noticing I absolutely did not expect anything….I mean seriously who runs up in the rain wearing slippers with a dish on her head to an uber chic afternoon tea).

Everyone was dressed stunningly with their gorgeous hats. The table was decorated with beautiful fresh flowers, china from my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and my moms friend, (a detail I absolutely love), the delicious pastries and scones and the pretty name plates on each chair. The menu cards were printed on fine rice paper (thanks to my uncle for ironing these) and the tea box beautifully decorated by my mom. My friend Nara, gave a beautiful speech (thanks girls) and we even had gift bags filled with goodies from the aloe farm and Dior.

It was an amazing afternoon, with exquisite details and people I love.

I am truly blessed with such family and friends.

The famous 'Barcelona X Chair' chair was designed in 1929, by Mies van de Rohe together with Lilly Reich for the his German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exhibition. The Barcelona Chair design is said to be derived from his interpretation of an Egyptian royal folding chair and a Roman folding footstool, it came to define the genre, an icon for the era and perhaps the whole modern movement. Well, it is quite lovely (and relieving) to know that today I will be finally handing-in my thesis. (yippie.....I'd like to scream it from the top of my lungs). I must say, that it was quite some work (more than I had anticipated....and I seriously believe I read more these last few months than ever before). However.....lets get to the important part of this post. Considering that all will go well, I will graduate soon. Lucky us, the graduation is in New York (I know....its amazing...and really it was one of the main reasons for actually doing the masters degree......just kidding). In any case, end of the month I will be happily flying to the big apple for some much needed city time. This is the first year (in well....a long time) that I have not visited New York and so I am extremely excited (I really think the streets of Soho have missed me.....(really my fantasy abilities astound even me).

If you have any "must-do" things like amazing stationary shops, a beautiful fabric shops (I love to have my clothes made) and the best place to find some gorgeous vintage pieces, delicious restaurants or great clubs/bars, do let me know.

Chanels' first business venture which began at the now legendary 21 Rue Cambon location was to sell hats to the wealthy nobles and elite upper class. Her style became known after she began buying straw boater hats and decorating them in a simpler manner than current fashion dictated. Chanel hats were worn by actress Gabrielle Dorziat in the play Bel Ami, presented by Theatre du Vaudeville in 1912.

Lovely to see how her legacy is still much a part of the couture line.

Tulips are remarkable flowers which seem to have the power to capture hearts (and break them). Although the Dutch Tulipomania is the most famous, Tulips have experienced other periods of "power" in other countries. The first mania occurred in 1500's in Turkey - which was the time of the Ottoman Empire and of Sultan Suleiman I (1494-1566). Tulips became highly cultivated blooms, developed for the pleasure of the Sultan and his entourage. During the Turkish reign of Ahmed III (1703-30) it is believed that the Tulip reigned supreme as a symbol of wealth and prestige and the period later became known as 'Age of the Tulips'.

It was during the early 1700's that the Turks began what was probably the first of the Tulip Festivals which was held at night during a full moon. Hundreds of exquisite vases were filled with the most breath-taking Tulips, crystal lanterns were used to cast an enchanting light over the gardens whilst aviaries were filled with canaries and nightingales that sang for the guests. Romantically, all guests were required to wear colours which harmonised with the flowers!

The Orient Express

One of the definate items on my bucket list is a trip on the Venice Simplon Orient Epress, from Paris to Venice. How incredibly wonderful and chic that would be.

The 'Orient Express' Story

A landmark moment in railway history, October 1883 saw the launch of the original Orient Express. Leaving from Paris, it steamed through the Alps, Budapest and Bucharest to Constantinople.

Packed with grandees and unheard of luxuries such as soap by the washbasins, reports swiftly came back of its exquisite food, excellent wine and impeccable service.

This legendary train continued to carry kings, celebrities and shady characters between great European cities up until its 1920s heyday. Many of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express's current carriages date from this era. After World War II other forms of transport nudged it into decline. Its last service as a regular passenger train was in May 1977.

The fabled luxury train was however saved by entrepreneur and rail enthusiast, James B. Sherwood. In 1977 he bought two of the train's carriages at a Sotheby's auction in Monte Carlo.

The next few years were spent locating, purchasing and restoring some 35 vintage carriages. In May 1982 the legend was reborn when the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express made its maiden run from London to Venice.

Today, the gleaming carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express luxury train continue to transport passengers across Europe in exquisite surroundings on one of the most celebrated and romantic journeys in the world.

Good morning! It is Friday once again. A rainy Friday here on the island (which is cosy when you are still lying in bed, but inpractical when you are wearing a white shirt....yes not smart.....but it looks so nice with the white pearls....hmmm). Happy to note though that I made it to the office with an unstained shirt.

Today I am all into the mailboxes (let me note that I absolutely love sending out snail mail to my friends, I very much enjoy receiving cards.....but any other mail.....well..... lets just say I have a lot of filing to do....which I promise I will get to soon). But I love these mailboxes. And am (still) considering painting mine orange......perphaps it will make the mailman smile more often. But if I ever find one like in the last photograph.....oeoelala.....tres chic.

This morning I woke up with a sudden (much unexplained) need to have chic luggage. This has of course become somewhat of a treasure hunt, as most of the uber chic suitcases are immensely heavy (and considering all the weight restrictions airlines have these days), we need to (unfortunately) pack practically for travel. If it were up to me I would have a beautiful red (or beige....really I'd like both) Globe-Trotter suitcase (and the vanity case to match.....of course....). One day....one day.....for now, I just dream and enjoy these wonderful images (and my sturdy red Samsonite will do for now).

In Paris.

Ah, just imagine, disembarking on the banks of the Seine to head to dinner on a warm fall evening while the sun is still shining lightly on the outskirts of Paris.

Paris always brings back wonderful memories of weekends with the girls, lunches at the hotel Costes, 6am tea on the balcony overlooking the Champs Elysee, dancing in the Ritz hallways with Percy, amazing dinners at Pompidou with Las Guapas, parties near the Arc d' Triomphe and perhaps one of the best.....driving to Paris and getting stuck on the Belgium highway for hours. This all, combined with the ever so-lovely macarroon treats at Laduree.

Paris! The mere mention of it brings glamour to your day.
